R. Kelly Legal Battle: Victims Demand Millions in Pursuit of Justice
Even though he may spend the next 27 years in prison, abuse victims of the troubled R&B legend R. Kelly are still attempting to get the millions of dollars that the disgraced artist still owes them.

Kelly is still liable for about $9.9 million of the $10.3 million judgment that six victims won against him in 2022, and they are suing him and his record label to collect the money.

In their Manhattan Supreme Court brief, Lizette Martinez, Lisa Van Allen, Kelly Rodgers, Faith Rodgers, Roderick Gartell, and Gem Pratts—all of whom were in the Lifetime documentary series "Surviving R. Kelly"—said they have only received two payments totaling less than $500,000.

Kelly, 58, and his former record company, Universal Music, as well as its publishing division, Universal Music-Z Tunes, are being sued.

The lawsuit also names Chicago-based IndyBuild, a revenue-sharing platform for independent artists, and Kelly's jailed former manager, Donnell Russell.

According to Kelly's victims, he was sentenced in August 2023 to pay the six plaintiffs $5.1 million in total compensatory damages and an additional $4.5 million in punitive penalties, along with $2,450.30 every day in interest.

According to court documents, Universal Music "remains contractually obligated to collect revenues and remit music publishing royalties to Kelly" even if their co-publishing relationship expired in 2019. The victims should receive the money.

Requests for comment from the defendants' attorneys were not answered.

Even when reports of Kelly's abuse of young girls started to surface in the 1990s, his followers still loved him and purchased millions of his CDs.

He was found guilty in 2022 of creating child pornography and luring females for sex after being found not guilty of child pornography charges in Chicago in 2008.
