WhatsApp to discontinue service on select devices in May

WhatsApp will discontinue support for some iPhones and Android devices in May 2025.

WhatsApp is one of the most popular messaging programs, with almost two billion monthly users, including Nigerians.

Meta, WhatsApp's parent company, is changing WhatsApp's compatibility with operating systems, which means that some older smartphones will not fulfill the minimum operating system requirements.

iPhones from 2013 and 2014, including the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus, are believed to be affected.

Android phones that cannot be updated to version 5.0 (Lollipop) or above will also be affected. Android phones include Samsung's Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace 3, Galaxy S4 Mini; Motorola's Moto G (1st Gen), Razr HD, Moto E 2014; HTC's One X, One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601, LG's Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini, L90; and Sony's Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T, and Xperia V.

WhatsApp noted in a statement that the modifications are part of routine updates to guarantee that the program remains secure and functional when used with newer phones.
