This week, iSpace, a Japanese corporation, is set to perform a historic moon landing.
On Thursday, June 5, at 3:24 p.m. EDT (1924 GMT), the company's Reslience lunar lander will try to land in Mare Frigoris ("Sea of Cold"), a basalt plain in the moon's northern hemisphere. A live webcast of the landing attempt will be available on ispace's YouTube channel starting around one hour before to the touchdown.
For ispace and Japan, which has only made one successful soft lunar landing to date—that of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency's SLIM spacecraft, which landed last year—success would be enormous.

Additionally, it would be a significant turning point for commercial spaceflight, which has been aiming more and more for the moon.
iSpace's second lunar lander is called Resilience. In April 2023, the first attempted a landing on the moon but was unsuccessful. The lander will launch a tiny rover named Tenacious and run a number of research instruments on the lunar surface if Resilience is successful on June 5.
Along with Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost, another private moon lander, Reslience flew on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket on January 15 and successfully landed on March 2.

It took resilience a lot longer to reach the moon. In order to steer the spacecraft along a fuel-efficient trajectory that used gravitational forces to change its direction, it accomplished a lunar flyby, a brief Earth orbit phase, and deep space and lunar orbit operations.
"Just as they always do after a major burn of the propulsion system, ispace engineers are currently hard at work analyzing the path that the 3rd orbital control maneuver put Resilience on," ispace officials stated in a May 30 article on the company's website. "If necessary, they may make a small adjustment to optimize the lander's direction of travel called an orbital trim maneuver."
The spacecraft captured a breathtaking image of the lunar surface from orbit before its most recent maneuver, highlighting the moon's numerous craters and intricate structure. As it prepares for its landing attempt later this week, Resilience is circling the moon at a speed of around 3,600 mph (5,800 kph), completing a lap every two hours.
