Why South Africans are celebrating the removal of Rhodes statue
The 19th Century figure, unveiled in 1934 in Capetown reminded South Africans of the racist past.

The "Rhodes Must Fall" campaign began in March after activist Chumani Maxwele smeared excrement on the statue as a protest against Rhodes' racism and its legacy at UCT.

The campaign has triggered attacks on other statues around the country seen as representing South Africa's racist past.

Students shout out and place a bucket on the head as they climb on top of the decades old bronze statue of British colonialist Cecil John Rhodes, as the statue is removed from the campus at the Cape Town University
