Uromi killings: Edo CP transferred, northerners safe in State – Kano Dep Gov

Kano State Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, has affirmed the safety of northerners living in Edo State, following recent violence that claimed lives of several Kano indigenes.

Shortly after returning on a journey to Edo to gather information and promote peace, he made the comments.

Gwarzo led a powerful group to the South South State, according to a Daily Trust report.

The delegation included four commissioners, the chairman of Bunkure Local Government, which was most impacted by the tragedy, the ambassador Muhammad Isa Umar, the Emir of Rano, and a representative from the Edo community in Kano.

Speaking to reporters in Kano, Gwarzo disclosed that the visit came after Governor Monday Okpebholo's previous condolence visit to Torankawa Community in Kano's Bunkure Local Government Area, where seven of the dead were born.

According to Gwarzo, the group was welcomed by both political and traditional leaders when they visited the location of the event in Uromi, Edo State.

He said the response was tremendous, with a sizable crowd—mostly from the north—expressing gratitude and solidarity.

We had a meeting with the senior leaders and the monarch of the Uromi Kingdom. We were personally escorted to the spot by the governor of Edo State. The turnout was amazing, despite the lengthy drive—nearly two hours—from Benin, he noted.

He praised the administration of Edo State for taking aggressive measures, such as disbanding the vigilante group that was reportedly responsible for the killings, arresting 14 individuals, and continuing security agency operations to capture others who are still at large.

The deputy governor said, "The incident led to the transfer of the Commissioner of Police in Edo State, demonstrating the seriousness with which the state government is handling the situation."

He also revealed that Kano had put together an extensive report that detailed the victims and the magnitude of the losses, including lost property.

According to him, Governor Okpebholo has officially received the report and has pledged to compensate the victims and their families.

Gwarzo restated every Nigerian's constitutional right to live and work in peace wherever in the nation and underlined that justice is still the top priority for the Kano State Government.

"We are all the owners of Nigeria. Every citizen's right to live and work anywhere in the nation is guaranteed under the constitution.

"The Edo governor has given us his word that those accountable will be held accountable and that restitution will be given. He clarified that Edo does not harbor hostility toward Northerners. I can state with confidence that our people are extremely safe there based on what we saw," he said.

Additionally, he verified that 26 people, mostly from five Kano local government areas, had survived the attack.
