Barcelona's wage restructuring programme gets underway

Now begins a crucial phase in the Barcelona president's plan of action: agreeing reduced salaries for key first team players.

Thus far, Mateu Alemany has made initial contact with the agents of Gerard Pique, Sergio Busquets, Sergi Roberto and Jordi Alba to express the need to reduce their salaries.

However, negotiations have not yet taken place, as Laporta waited until Messi had agreed to take a 50 per cent pay cut in his new contract before proceeding to ask the other players to follow suit in taking a wage reduction.

Although it has been suggested that the Pique, Busquets, Sergi Roberto and Jordi Alba would be asked to take a 40 per cent pay cut, the actual percentage has not yet been specified.

This week, the negotiations with the players' agents will take place, although the club are under no illusions of the difficulty of the task, given that the players are not in favour of taking wage reductions.
