Shocking Political Drama: South Korea's President Faces Insurrection Charges

The impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol became the first sitting president in South Korean history to be indicted after prosecutors charged him with rebellion for his brief declaration of martial law.

Early in December, President Yoon tried to declare martial law, which caused political unrest around the nation but was quickly revoked by parliament.

Since his arrest last week, Yoon, who denies any involvement, has been detained.

After spending weeks pent up in his fortified home with his Presidential Security Service crew, the beleaguered president finally left his domestic property in a motorcade with investigators.

Earlier this month, the nation's Corruption Investigation Office for High-Ranking Officials (CIO) made an unsuccessful attempt to apprehend him following an hours-long altercation in which soldiers and members of the presidential security detail prevented about 80 police officers and investigators from entering the presidential compound.

If found guilty, he might be sentenced to life in prison or the death penalty, though South Korea hasn't carried out an execution in many years.
