How Obasa's Apology to the DSS Unravels Hidden Assembly Hurdle

In response to the recent attack on Department of State Services (DSS) personnel on the Assembly grounds, Lagos Speaker Mudashiru Obasa has expressed regret to security agencies.
Following widely shared footage of security personnel being mistreated at a difficult moment at the legislative chamber on February 17, 2025, the apology was made.
Some of the Assembly officials participating in the attack were arrested, charged, and placed under remand as a result of the incident.
The Assembly officials who were allegedly directly involved in the attack on DSS operatives were arrested by the secret police after investigations.
Among those detained are Ganiyu Hassan, an assistant to a principal officer in the Lagos Assembly; Adekunle Ajayi, a legislative officer; and Olalekan Azeez, the Lagos Assembly's Sergeant-at-Arms.

A Lagos Magistrate Court arraigned the accused on accusations of assault, breach of public peace, and obstruction of lawful duties. The judge remanded them to the Kirikiri Correctional Center for additional proceedings following the hearing.
Speaker Obasa, who returned to office today after the recent political turmoil in the Assembly, responded to the situation by apologizing to the impacted security officers and expressing his sincere regret for the occurrence.
He expressed regret for the humiliation and reaffirmed the Assembly's resolve to keep close ties with security services.
"I hereby apologize on behalf of the Lagos State House of Assembly to the security agencies involved, especially the DSS operatives, for the humiliation and violence they endured, as shown in widely shared recordings.

The Speaker urged an amicable settlement of the issue and reiterated the Assembly's dedication to promoting collaboration with security authorities.
"The Lagos Assembly and security personnel have always had a friendly and courteous relationship. We genuinely hope that the trust we have developed over the years won't be harmed by this incident. We also hope for a peaceful resolution and make an appeal on behalf of those charged in relation to the incident," he said.
