Army confirms no casualties in Giwa Barracks explosions, blames heatwave

Following repeated explosions at an ammunition storage facility in Giwa Barracks, Maiduguri, on Wednesday night, Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, Theatre Commander of Operation Hadin Kai, has told the people that the situation is under control and there is no need for concern.
The explosions, which occurred at 11:30 p.m. on April 30, 2025, caused widespread alarm among locals living near the barracks. Many people left their homes in alarm as the deafening booms echoed throughout the area.
Speaking to journalists on Thursday at Maimalari Cantonment, Major General Abubakar stated that the explosions were caused by the severe heat that is now afflicting Borno and other parts of the country, which harmed the munitions storage facilities.

To assess the scope of the event and aid rescue efforts, the Air Component of Operation Hadin Kai, in collaboration with the Nigerian Army Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Command, performed aerial surveillance over the blast site and adjacent Maiduguri metropolis.
Troops were also sent in to secure the area and prevent any potential criminal advantage of the situation.
