Devastating Strasbourg Tram Crash: More Than 60 Hurt

According to police, 68 people were hurt when two trams crashed at Strasbourg's central station on Saturday.

According to reports, one stopped tram reportedly slid backward down a slope for no apparent reason, slamming into another motionless tram.

Social media users shared images and videos of two trams with scores of people inside. One video shows scenes of chaos and rising smoke as an alarm goes off.

According to a prefecture spokesperson, no fatalities have been confirmed and an investigation into the accident's cause has been launched. The collision was not intentional, according to the prosecution.

Johan, one of the witnesses, told the AFP news agency that he witnessed one of the trams quickly reverse and that "we heard a big impact, a big bang."

The tram's doors flew out upon contact, according to another witness who spoke to BFM TV.

A sizable security barrier was erected in front of the station, according to the broadcaster.

The Fire and Rescue Service of the Bas-Rhin region posted on X, asking people to stay away from the area so that emergency personnel can reach it.

Rene Cellier, the director of the service, stated that while clavicle fractures, knee sprains, and scalp wounds were among the non-fatal injuries they documented, "mostly trauma" was another.

"There are also around 100 people who have no particular injuries but are being seen by the doctors,"

He went on to say that the scenario "could have been much more serious" and that some 130 firefighters and 50 cars were sent to the spot.

The director of the CTS, which oversees public transportation in Strasbourg, Emmanuel Auneau, stated that the two tram drivers were "not physically injured, but are very shocked".
