Unveiling a Sequel: Diaz and Foxx Ready for 'Back in Action' Follow-up
Warning: This article includes spoilers for Back in Action.

Cameron Diaz makes her long-awaited comeback to film with Back in Action, an action comedy about married former CIA spies who are drawn back into the world of espionage when their cover is broken.

After overcoming friend-turned-foe Chuck (Kyle Chandler) in the film's heated climax, Emily and her husband Matt (Jamie Foxx) receive an unexpected visit from old colleague Baron (Andrew Scott), who already has another job for the couple — this time it's related to Emily's family tree.

"We're not going back to work, Baron," Emily replies, adding, "That was a one-time unplanned deal."

"I wouldn't be here if it weren't serious," Baron says. He then adds that Chuck's body is still missing, and he needs Emily and one of her family members to help him find it. "My mom would be thrilled to join you," she adds of her mother, Ginny, an MI6 veteran portrayed by Glenn Close.

Then Baron drops the bombshell: "It's not your mom; it's your dad."

"Your dad?" Matt inquires, shocked. "Yeah… did I not tell you about him?" Emily answers.
Because Emily's father is never mentioned before this point, and no further information is supplied, Entertainment Weekly contacted the film's director, Seth Gordon (Horrible Bosses, Identity Thief), to learn more about the cliffhanger and a possible sequel.

"There's certainly an idea about who the dad could be and what the whole story could be about," he explains before jokingly blaming the studio, Netflix, for the secrecy. "They have yet to acknowledge the possibility of a sequel! So if you say something kind, maybe there is a chance."

But, like his spies, Gordon is already a step ahead. The filmmaker hinted that a hypothetical sequel will feature Emily and Matt's children, grumpy teenage daughter Alice (McKenna Roberts) and tech-savvy younger son Leo (Rylan Jackson). "What I'm going towards is there's these moments where family comes in, and the circumstances of a teenager's life come in conflict with someone's experience as a spy," Gordon explains." "I feel like there's a few opportunities or landmarks that we can build on from their lives."

For example, the director mentions Emily and Matt's son, Leo, who is shown to be a natural at spycraft throughout the movie. "I'll tell you that Leo, who is based on my son, grew nine or ten inches taller while filming. His voice had decreased, so it would not be picked up the following day. I believe we would acknowledge the truth of their lives' timelines by showing another incident, possibly later in high school, for both. But I attempted to [weave] in the first one that Leo demonstrates these moments of promise and aptitude."

As for Ginny's enigmatic ex-husband, "I think you got to believe that she met him somewhere through work," Gordon speculates. "It wouldn't be so horrible if he was also British. You'd have to believe the guy with the gun. So there are certain folks you may consider for that role. "We definitely have some creative ideas."

Back in Action is currently streaming on Netflix.
