Power Outage Chaos: National Grid Collapse Shuts Down Cities

Another system failure occurred within the national grid, plunging numerous Nigerians into darkness.

According to our correspondent, the grid experienced a loss of power generation a few minutes past 11 on Wednesday morning.

Ndidi Mbah, the spokesperson for the Transmission Company of Nigeria, has not replied to our correspondent's message, stating that she was attending an event.

Nonetheless, our correspondent received confirmation from sources within certain electricity-producing firms that a disturbance in the general grid occurred on Wednesday morning.

Our correspondent reports that there was a trip-off, and the power outage occurred before noon.

When the incident happened, most power plants on the grid experienced a loss of generation.

At 11 am, the hourly power generation was 4064 megawatts, but it fell to 1203 MW by noon and reached 0.00 MW by 1 pm.

This concerns the initial occurrence of the grid's collapse in 2025, following a line trip incident in January.

In 2024, the grid failure occurred 12 times and surpassed 100 occurrences within a decade.

On Wednesday, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company confirmed the development on its X handle.

„Dear Valued Customer, We regret to inform you that at 11:34 am today, a system disturbance on the national grid caused a power outage in our franchise areas.

“Though a gradual restoration of the power supply has begun, please be assured that we are collaborating closely with relevant stakeholders to fully restore electricity as soon as the grid is stabilised. “We appreciate your understanding and patience as we strive to serve you better,” the post states.
