Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding 2 is set to launch on June 26 as a PlayStation 5 exclusive
Death Stranding will return with a sequel, Kojima Productions founder Hideo Kojima announced on Sunday. The game, set for release on June 26, with pre-orders opening on March 17, will arrive almost six years after the original game’s release. Kojima and Sony announced the game’s release date at SXSW 2025.

Kojima revealed a 10-minute trailer for Death Stranding 2: On the Beach during a panel discussion. The sequel to the 2019 action game will once again star Norman Reedus as Sam Bridges, with Léa Seydoux and Troy Baker returning as Fragile and Higgs, respectively. They will be joined by new characters played by Elle Fanning (Tomorrow), Shioli Kutsuna (Rainy), and George Miller (Tarman). Also joining the cast are Luca Marinelli as Neil, Debra Wilson as Doctor, and Alissa Jung as Lucy.
The main story is still unknown, though Death Stranding 2 is set 11 months after the formation of the United Cities of America. The game’s reveal was first made during The Game Awards 2022, where Kojima said he had rewritten the sequel’s story from scratch. In Death Stranding 2, Kojima aims to explore a deeper interpretation of the term “strand” and the essence of human connection.
The original Death Stranding was critically acclaimed and praised for its characters, gameplay, and captivating storyline. It was initially released on PlayStation 4, with a director’s cut launching on PlayStation 5 (review) in September 2021. Since then, the game has been released on multiple platforms, including Apple’s Mac.
A live-action Death Stranding movie was announced in 2022 and is being produced by A24. The film will take place in the same world but won’t directly recreate the events of the first game, Kojima said at the time of the announcement.
Kojima also announced The Strands of Harmony World Tour, a Death Stranding concert tour that will visit 19 cities and feature the game’s music performed by a live orchestra and singers. The first tour begins on November 8, 2025, in Sydney, Australia.
Kojima is often considered one of the best video game designers of the 21st century. He rose to fame with the Metal Gear Solid series, which was not only critically acclaimed but also commercially successful.
As of December 2023, the Metal Gear series had sold more than 60 million copies worldwide, generating over $1 billion in revenue.
