USA's Shocking Exit from WHO: What Does This Mean for Global Health?

In response to the United States' statement that it intended to leave the global health organization, the World Health Organization (WHO) expressed sadness for the nation's choice.

In a message posted on his X handle on Tuesday, WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus underlined the organization's critical role in preserving world health.

By addressing the underlying causes of disease, strengthening health systems, and identifying, preventing, and responding to health emergencies, including disease outbreaks, frequently in hazardous locations that others cannot access, the World Health Organization has been instrumental in safeguarding the health and security of people worldwide, including Americans, the statement said.

U.S. as a founding member of WHO

Along with 193 other Member States, the United States was one of the original members of WHO in 1948 and has since actively engaged in the World Health Assembly and Executive Board, helping to shape and oversee the organization's operations.

"The United States and the World Health Organization have saved countless lives and shielded Americans and everyone else from health hazards for more than 70 years.

We have worked together to eradicate smallpox and have nearly eradicated polio. The World Health Organization's membership has benefited and contributed to American institutions, the statement continued.

Reforms strengthening WHO’s impact

The statement also emphasized how the United States and other Member States were involved in the successful changes.

In order to improve accountability, cost-effectiveness, and impact in nations, the World Health Organization has carried out the most extensive set of reforms in its history throughout the last seven years. This work is still ongoing.

"For the sake of the health and well-being of millions of people worldwide, the World Health Organization is optimistic that the United States will change its mind and looks forward to having a productive conversation to preserve the partnership between the USA and WHO."

US President Donald Trump has issued an executive order declaring the United States’ intent to withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO).

The decision includes the revocation of a Presidential Letter sent to the United Nations on January 20, 2021, which had previously reversed the U.S.’s July 6, 2020, withdrawal notice.
Additionally, Executive Order 13987, signed on January 25, 2021, which organized a U.S. government response to Provide a Unified and Effective Response to Combat COVID–19 and to Provide United States Leadership on Global Health and Security, has also been revoked.
The President has directed the Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs to establish necessary directorates and coordination mechanisms within the National Security Council to safeguard public health and fortify biosecurity.
The Secretary of State, along with the Director of the Office of Management and Budget, has been instructed to promptly halt any future transfers of U.S. funds, support, or resources to the WHO.

Along with finding reliable U.S. and foreign partners to take over crucial tasks that were previously handled by the organization, they are also entrusted with recalling and reevaluating U.S. employees and contractors who collaborate with the WHO.

In accordance with the new executive measures, the 2024 U.S. Global Health Security Strategy must also be reviewed, revoked, and replaced by the Director of the White House Office of Pandemic Preparedness and Response Policy.
