The ministry stated in a statement that between 1710 and 2300 GMT on Sunday, "air defense systems intercepted and destroyed 162 Ukrainian drones."

According to the report, 31 drones were caught over the Belgorod region and 57 were intercepted over the Kursk region, with the majority of the drones being shot down over areas that border Ukraine.

The bombardment occurred only hours before Russian and Ukrainian officials were scheduled to meet in Istanbul for the second round of bilateral negotiations between the two countries since Moscow's February 2022 army deployment into Ukraine.

It also happened the day after Kyiv claimed to have launched one of its most egregious and effective attacks on Russian territory, striking dozens of strategic bombers stored at airbases located thousands of kilometers behind the front line in deep inside Russia.
