Sallah: Shocking Impact of Mokwa Flood on Ram Prices

Cattle sellers at the Kara Cattle Market in Lagos State's Isheri neighborhood have blamed the rise in ram prices on the flood that shook Niger State's Mokwa Local Government Area (LGA) only hours before the 2025 Eid Al-Adha celebrations.


After heavy rains that started late on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, and lasted into Thursday, Mokwa experienced a severe flood. Thousands were displaced by the tragedy, and more than 200 bodies have been recovered.


This was revealed to Channels Television on Wednesday by Hamza Saidu, a special assistant to the managing director of the Kara Cattle Market in Isheri, Lagos.

He stated, “The mokwa flood has affected many lives. A lot of trailers hauling cattles got trapped in Mokwa owing to the water. They are unable to enter Lagos. The Mokwa flood prevents those who are meant to travel north to transport cattle to Lagos from doing so. As a result, the cost of cattle has gone up this year.

Additionally, Shehu Usman, the Chairman of Lagos' Mile 12 International Market, supported Saidu's position by pointing out that drivers must use an alternate route, which adds time and costs.

Usman bemoaned the low patronage this year as a result of the cattle pricing.

"As you can see, there are no buyers and not a lot of ram in the market."

Hundreds of vehicles carrying a variety of goods were caught when the Mokwa Bridge in Niger State, which serves as a bridge between the purchasing south and the agrarian north, collapsed due to the disastrous flood.
