Shocking Ski Lift Collapse in Spain: How It Affects Travelers
A ski lift crashed at a resort in Spain, injuring dozens of people, emergency officials said CNN.
The event, which occurred at 12:00 p.m. local time at the Astun ski resort in the Pyrenees mountains, injured approximately 30 persons, according to the Aragon civil protection press office.
Ten of those injured were sent to the hospital, two with "maximum priority" and another two "who require urgent attention," according to the press office. There were no fatalities, it said.
The Spanish Civil Guard stated in a post on X that the ski lift is 15 meters (more than 49 feet) high.
According to Spanish public network RTVE, one of its pulleys went free, causing part of its structure to fall. According to RTVE, when it plummeted, the chairs on the ski lift became destabilized, turning several of them upside down.
The Civil Guard shared video from the scene, showing hundreds of people caught in the snow on a mountain when the ski lift broke.
"It's like a cable has come off, the chairs have bounced and people have been thrown off," a person who witnessed the incident said.
