35% ($189.8 million) came from the home box office, and 65% ($352.5 million) came from foreign countries, including Nigeria.

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, the film's distributor, made sure that 4,100 theaters screened the film, guaranteeing its place as one of the most popular holiday releases.

The movie immediately took the top spot as the highest-grossing Hollywood film in its first weekend in Nigeria and set the record for the country's best live-action premiere in 2024. Mufasa had already earned N309 million by the end of December, securing its position as one of the year's highest-grossing movies and extending its hold into the new year.

Audiences gave the film a "A-" CinemaScore, indicating broad enjoyment, despite reviewers' varied assessments.

A little background

Mufasa: The Lion King, a photorealistic animated epic that combines prequel and sequel themes, was directed by Academy Award winner Barry Jenkins.

Voice actors Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner, Donald Glover, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, and John Kani all reprise their roles in the 2019 movie. Aaron Pierre, Mads Mikkelsen, Thandiwe Newton, and Kelvin Harrison Jr. are among the newcomers to the group. Notably, Blue Ivy Carter makes her feature film debut in the film, which adds even more star power.

Things you should be aware of

Mufasa is currently the tenth highest-grossing film of 2024 worldwide and is predicted to overtake Venom: The Last Dance ($476.9 million) for ninth spot shortly.

Despite Mufasa's success in Nigeria and elsewhere, its box office receipts pale in comparison to the Lion King remake's incredible $1.66 billion lifetime total in 2019. However, its promising beginning suggests that there will continue to be a market for Disney's recreated classics.

The domestic performance of Mufasa in the first several weeks is broken out as follows:

  • Dec 20 (Friday): $13,340,381
  • Dec 21 (Saturday): $11,850,488 (-11.2%)
  • Dec 22 (Sunday): $10,218,496 (-13.8%)
  • Dec 25 (Christmas Day): $14,722,175 (+105.6%)
  • Dec 29 (Sunday): $11,326,817 (-15%)
  • Jan 1 (New Year’s Day): $10,372,135 (+42.7%)
Despite dips in daily revenue post-holidays, the film maintained steady momentum, with spikes on key dates like Christmas and New Year’s Day.
