The Waiter’ Smashes Nollywood Milestones: How AY Makun Achieved a N200 Million Box Office Feat!
AY Makun, a stand-up comedian turned actor and producer, has released another blockbuster, The Waiter.

The action-comedy picture has crossed the N200 million barrier at the Nigerian box office, making an amazing N218.6 million in just two weeks after its release on December 20, 2024.

This achievement elevates The Waiter to the ranks of Nollywood's elite, alongside other high-performing films such as Toyin Abraham's Alakada: Bad and Boujee, which debuted on the same day, and Everybody Loves Jenifa, a record-breaking picture that grossed more than N1 billion.

The Waiter, directed by Toka McBaror and produced by Ayo Makun Productions, features an ensemble cast that includes Nollywood veterans Deyemi Okanlawon, Regina Daniels, Toke Makinwa, Brain Jotter, Williams Uchemba, and Shaffy Bello.
Corporate World Entertainment produced the film. The Waiter is a dynamic blend of comedy with a subtle critique of Nigeria's sociopolitical situation, resulting in a picture that is both enjoyable and thought-provoking.

Despite its box-office triumph, The Waiter received mixed reviews from reviewers. Some have pointed out perceived flaws in the plot and subplots, as well as the usage of AY's characteristic character, "Warri" Akpos, a fan favorite known for his humorous antics but sometimes criticized for a lack of character development. However, ticket sales reveal a different scenario, demonstrating that fans are still intrigued by AY's distinctive blend of comedy and relatability.

What to know:
The Waiter's great performance follows AY's recent success with Merry Men 3, which debuted on October 13, 2023. According to the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN), the picture grossed more than N100 million over its theatrical run, with N33.4 million in opening weekend earnings.

  • His subsequent films, like A Trip to Jamaica (2016) and the Merry Men trilogy, have reinforced his name as a filmmaker adept of merging laugh-out-loud comedy with fascinating narratives
With The Waiter, AY continues to push the limits of Nollywood's box office potential. His ability to draw large crowds despite critical reviews demonstrates his strong connection with Nigerian audiences, who eagerly await his ventures.
