At Least 28 People Killed After Bus Plunges More Than 2,500 Feet into Ravine: Reports
According to accounts, a bus accident on a mountain road in Bolivia has claimed the lives of at least 28 passengers.

According to BBC News, Reuters, DoroTV, and local station Unitel, the driver lost control of the car on Monday, February 17, and it tumbled down a 2625-foot deep ravine in the southwest district of Yocalla.

Local authorities first reported that 31 individuals, thought to be passengers, had perished in the event, according to a preliminary report that Unitel was able to get. Police are still looking for further dead, even though the number was eventually reduced to 28.

Furthermore, according to Unitel, fourteen individuals—four of them were children—were hurt and taken to Daniel Bracamonte Hospital in Potosí.

Authorities believe the driver, who was traveling to the city of Oruo, may have been speeding at the time of the event and was "unable" to control the bus, according to Police Colonel Victor Benavides, as reported by DOROTV, which cited the AFP news agency.

According to Reuters, Benavides went on to say that the bus' path was "full of twists and turns."

According to Unitel, emergency personnel "are still recovering the bodies, while investigations are carried out," according to Colonel Limbert Choque, a spokesman for the departmental police command in Potosí.

According to the BBC, this is thought to be the most serious traffic collision that has been reported in the South American nation this year. In Bolivia, fatal traffic accidents are frequent, with an average of 1,400 fatalities annually.

The outlet also reported that in January, 19 people were killed when another bus came off a road, also near Potosí.

Bolivia Police did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for an update.
