Soludo's Plan to Halt Fake Drug Imports: A Call for Action
Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo has urged the federal government to act quickly to stop the importation of fake medications.

In order to keep hazardous products out of local markets, he emphasized the necessity of tighter supply chain regulation.

His request comes after regulators recently found massive amounts of prohibited and fake pharmaceuticals in Onitsha's markets, especially the infamous ?gb? Ogw? market.

Soludo emphasized that the remedy must start at the point of entry, where these hazardous materials are initially smuggled into the nation, even while local regulatory efforts continue.

After visiting Onitsha on Saturday to check the ?gb? Ogw? market and the nearby Plumbing Materials Market, which was recently closed by regulatory officials, the governor revealed this in a statement on X.com on Sunday.

"Today, I went to the ?gb? Ogw? and surrounding markets in Onitsha," he wrote. Given that it is Africa's largest open drug market, it is not surprise that federal agencies and regulatory bodies occasionally visit the market to enforce regulations and monitor the sale of controlled, counterfeit, and fake medications.

Given that it is Africa's largest open drug market, it is not surprise that federal agencies and regulatory bodies occasionally visit the market to enforce regulations and monitor the sale of controlled, counterfeit, and fake medications.

"My visit today was interventionist because narcotics and associated topics are absolutely within the Exclusive List. I started by trying to find out why other Onitsha markets near the drug market were closed.

"The leadership of the Plumbing Materials Market, which was closed along with the drug market, confirmed to me that the findings made by regulators in some shops were shocking and disturbing, despite the media frenzy created by a few political actors."

Numerous stores were discovered to be hiding containers of fake medications, many of which had been outlawed both domestically and internationally, according to Soludo.

Only the appropriate authorities can respond to the question of how these drugs, which have been outlawed both domestically and internationally, continue to be produced in India, travel through our several ports (air and sea), and end up in our local drug markets, he wrote.

In light of this, Soludo called for a more vigorous crackdown on the supply chain that imports dangerous drugs into the nation, stressing that the Federal Government must "tighten up the noose on the supply end of the value chain" even though efforts to eradicate fake and counterfeit drugs are vital.

In order to allow traders at the Plumbing Materials Market to reopen and resume their lawful business activities within ten days, Soludo noted, he has ordered that the search in the markets be expedited.

The governor added that a coordinated wholesale drug center is being built in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area, as part of his pledge to address the problem locally.

It is anticipated that the facility will house a new, standardized ?gb? Ogw? market.

This is our way of helping to put a stop to the current chaotic market environment that fosters the growth of counterfeit and phony medications.

"Onitsha continues to be Africa's biggest trading hub. We will raise this position even higher to a more appropriate level," he said.

Ten trucks carrying counterfeit, expired, and falsified medications were seized by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control during its enforcement action at the ?gb? Ogw? Bridge Head Market in Onitsha, the commercial center of Anambra State, according to Dorotv.
