NLC Rejects Electricity Tariff Adjustment, Threatens Nationwide Protests

The Federal Government's intentions to regularize energy rates for Bands A, B, and C customers have been rejected by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
The labor union promised to spearhead large-scale nationwide protests throughout Nigeria if the government proceeds with its proposal in a statement issued on Sunday following the National Executive Council (NEC) in Yola, Adamawa State.
Adebayo Adelabu, the minister of power, announced last Thursday that lower bands would be promoted to Band A.
In a statement signed by Emmanuel Ugboaja, the general secretary of the NLC, the labor union denounced the "forceful migration" of customers from lower bands to Band A.

"This deliberate exploitation of the working class and the larger Nigerian population, approved by the Ministry of Power, is nothing less than economic violence."
Through constant tariff increases, higher taxes, and unrelenting economic strangulation, the ruling elite—who are enforcing global monopoly capital—is clearly intent to further worsen the suffering of the Nigerian people.
"The ruling class continues to shift the burden of their fiscal irresponsibility onto the already impoverished working masses, despite the fact that inflation has skyrocketed, wages have stagnated, and the cost of living has become intolerable."
The NEC-in-session cautions that there would be strong opposition to any announcement of additional rises in electricity rates.

Therefore, in the event that the Ministry of Power and NERC carry out their predatory plan to further raise electricity rates under any pretext, the Congress decides to organize a nationwide protest right now.
"The NLC will not tolerate the unholy schemes of capitalist profiteers and their state partners against the Nigerian people."
Due to an epileptic power supply that severely reduces production, Nigeria, the most populous country in Africa, has been dealing with unsolvable energy problems for decades. Power generation, transmission, and distribution have remained plagued by hydra-headed monsters of inconsistent policies, low investments, and operational difficulties despite the privatization of the energy sector.

In 2024, NERC authorized an increase in electricity tariffs, with Band A users paying roughly N250 per unit of power.
The problem for customers has been made worse by the fivefold increase in the price of easily accessible alternatives like gasoline and diesel. At least a few State Electrify Regulatory Commissions received licenses from NERC to operate power plants and distribute electricity in the same year.
