According to US Speaker Mike Johnson, a constitutional change is the only way for Donald Trump to be able to serve a third term as US president.

This comes after Trump said he was "not joking" about running for a third term over the weekend.

According to the 78-year-old Republican, there are "methods" for doing so.

Johnson asserted that a constitutional amendment would be necessary to accomplish this.

"I just told everybody to read the constitution; there is a constitutional path," Johnson remarked in an interview with NBC News on Tuesday regarding the development. To do so, you must amend the constitution, which is a difficult task.

Johnson then said that while he and Trump had “joked about it”, he believed the president “recognises the constitutional limitations.”
