Shocking Benue Attacks: Alia's Urgent Plea for Peace"
Benue killings: Alia decries deadly attacks in Ukum, Logo LGAs
Hyacinth Iormem Alia, the governor of Benue state, has expressed profound sadness over the concerted attacks on communities in the Logo and Ukum Local Government Areas, calling the deaths a "serious carnage."

Early on Friday, April 18, 2025, suspected armed herders riding motorbikes attacked the impacted settlements, killing at least 56 people through indiscriminate gunfire. As more bodies are found, the death toll is certain to increase.

Governor Alia was shocked by the extent of the destruction when he visited the attack sites on Saturday.

He called the attack a targeted and well-planned attack and called on the federal government to move quickly to help the state deal with the growing situation.

"I am aware that our security staff is putting in a lot of effort and that the federal government has provided significant assistance, but this still occurred. We need to take a more drastic and planned approach. I'm urging the federal government to help us immediately," he declared.

The governor expressed his deepest sympathies to the families of the deceased and urged the local young to maintain composure and refrain from retaliation, telling them that the state administration had taken immediate action to put an end to the violence.

Governor Alia met behind closed doors with traditional leaders and youth representatives in a town hall in Ugba, Logo LGA.

"We know our enemies, and we must confront them head-on," he said, delivering a severe warning to any Tiv members who could be working with the assailants.

He praised the peace-promoting work of security forces, religious authorities including the Most Rev'd Isaac Dugu, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Katsina-Ala, and traditional chiefs.

Before traveling to the severely damaged regions of Gbagir and Afia in Ukum LGA to evaluate the damage, Governor Alia also pledged material and logistical support for displaced people.

He was accompanied by Ukum LGA Chairman, Hon. Jonathan Modi; Tor Sankera II, HRH Chief David Sev-Av; and Ter Ukum, among others.

Katsina-Ala/Ukum/Logo Federal Constituency Representative Hon. Prince Solomon Wombo, meantime, denounced the attacks and promised to work with the state government to put an end to the violence.

Also speaking, Logo LGA Chairman Hon. Kav Clement, traditional ruler HRH Terngu Iorhuna, and youth leader Simon Yangetuma, all lamented the gruesome killings and called for urgent intervention from both state and federal authorities.
