The fight against Building Collapse in Nigeria
Building collapse seems to have taken a center stage in the constructio industry and this is a bad omen for the industry. This year buildings have collapsed  in about 3 states  (Edo State, Lagos State and Anambra state) The questions which this ugly phenomenon evoke are - Are the Builders not competent? Are they really engaged in the process of building production? and Have quacks  taken over the construction industry? This seminar is the first of its kind, hosted by NAOBS Enugu chapter in the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT) Enugu and was meant to give answers to these questions.

It was clearly stated that various professionals have their various roles to play in the building firm.

Like the:
Structural Engineers - design for the structural work of a building and can be seen on site to supervise, ensuring that what he designed it been executed.

Architects - designs for the building aesthetics while

Builders - are to manage and execute the work to the finishing.

But these days, we see even the traders, business people, untrained personnels venturing into building because of money, forgetting that the building profession involves serious trainings. Without these trainings, souls would be wasted in the event of a buiding collapse.

They went further to explain the bodies involved in seeing through the builders:

Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria (CORBON) and Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB) which are in various states, ensuring that quacks are being fished out and handed over to the law enforcement agency.

It was said that investigations are going on as regards to the Synagogue church guest house that collapsed (click here for the news). If the builder involved (if at all it was built by a professional) is found guilty, he/she would be punished accordingly.

How Building Collapse  is to be prevented in the Society.

  • Using of well trained and certified professionals in any building project.
  • Making sure that the standard materials are used in any building project.
  • Federal Government should as well work in hand with bodies like CORBON and NIOB in hunting down quacks.
  • Proper investigations and checkmates should be done before any building is executed.
  • Some businesses/registered Companies (for construction works) should employ trained builders for their field work activities.

(NAOBS with Rev. Sis)

(NAOBS with 3 Presidents)

As they still await for the Federal Government to give them police permit to work with, they advised on the clients (owners of building) to please use qualified and well trained builders in executing of
any building project or work. Don't just build because you have the idea... Great builders... Build right!
