Sanusi Dethroned As Emir Of Kano

The Kano State government has dethroned the Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II on Monday.

The Emir, who was the immediate past Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria, was dethroned following the State Council executive meeting. The meeting was presided over by the Governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

Governor Ganduje explained that Mohammed Sanusi II was dethroned because of his constant disregard for the state government, flagrant disobedience of constituted authorities and refusal to attend official meetings of the traditional rulers.

Meanwhile, Sanusi’s dethronement came as the climax to a long war between him and the state governor over perceived political differences. At the height of their silent war, Ganduje had in August 2019 split the Kano Emirates into four–Rano, Gaya, Karaye and Bichi–ostensibly to whittle Sanusi’s powers and influence.

In a statement signed by Alhaji Usman Alhaji, Secretary to the Kano state government, Ganduje says “The Kano State Executive Council under the Chairmanship of his Excellency the Governor of Kano State Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje OFR, has unanimously approved the immediate removal/dethronement of the Emir of Kano Emirate Muhammad Sunusi II.”

He added that the governor further said that dethroning Sanusi became expedient to save the Emirate from destruction as his ‘unchecked’ behaviour was gradually destroying the good image of the Kano Emirate.
