Scandal in Lagos: Speaker Obasa Impeached Over Multibillion-Naira Fraud
Speaker Mudashiru Obasa was impeached by members of the Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday after they accused him of many financial and legal violations.
Lasbat Meranda, his deputy, later took Mr. Obasa's job. Apapa Constituency 1's representative, Mrs. Meranda, was previously the House's chief whip.
The expulsion occurred a few days after The Gazette revealed that Mr. Obasa was in charge of withdrawing N43.5 billion for MPs' backup cars in addition to other contentious actions.
As far as Peoples Gazette is aware, Mr. Obasa was in Atlanta at the time of his impeachment.

Alongside former one-term governor Akinwunmi Ambode, Mr. Obasa, 52, was first elected Speaker on June 8, 2015.
His tenure as speaker has been marred by repeated accusations of political thuggery and fraud. The Gazette released a number of investigations in 2020 that showed how Mr. Obasa transferred money from Lagos to his personal businesses and bank accounts. At the time, Sahara reporters also discovered Mr. Obasa's assets located throughout Lagos.
After media allegations of Mr. Obasa's poor management overwhelmed the anti-graft office, the EFCC invited him to be questioned. He refuted every accusation, and following his meeting with the detectives.
