Why Peter Obi's Alliance with Abure Could Shape the Future of LP

Despite the crisis rocking the opposition Labour Party (LP), its legal adviser, Kehinde Edun, says the party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, is still with the Julius Abure camp.

Obi attended the September 2024 meeting called by Abia State Governor Alex Otti, where Nenadi Usman, the former Finance Minister, was named the party's leader until a new leader was chosen to succeed Abure.

But later, the High Court and the Court of Appeal decided that Abure should continue to serve as the party's chairman.

Speaking as a guest on Channels Television's Politics Today on Wednesday, Edun said that Obi has never declared his intention to leave the party and that he still has regular relationships with the Abure-led leadership.

When asked if Obi was back with the party's Abure camp after the court ruling, Edun replied, "I think so." He talks to us frequently and hasn't stated that he has quit the party, but he hasn't made any clear statements about it. What I know and believe is that he is with us.

The legal adviser acknowledged that the Labour Party's dilemma is hurting the party, but reassured party members that the leadership is working to find a solution.

We are working to make amends so that everyone can attend, and we still have time to do so. We are aware that the party is in crisis because of the way they are portraying it.

"We have never gotten into a quarrel with anyone. We took INEC to court instead of Nenadi, and once the court settled the case, they stated that they would like to join. Edun declared, "We have never filed a lawsuit against a party member.

Abure is still the National Chairman of the Labour Party, the Appeal Court reaffirmed last Friday.

In a ruling delivered by Justice Hamma Barka, a three-member panel of the appeal court ruled that its November 13, 2024, ruling, which acknowledged Abure as national chairman, remains in effect and has not been overturned by any court.

While rendering a decision in two distinct appeals submitted by Senator Esther Nenadi Usman, the caretaker committee, and the electoral umpire, Justice Barka made the statement.

In the two distinct appeals, the appellate court ruled that it refrained from delving into the Labour Party leadership dispute because it is not a justiciable matter.
