Tinubu Can’t Win 2027 Election With His Policies – SDP Chair

Updated Tuesday 4 February 2025 15:30
The National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Shehu Gabam, says the economic policies of President Bola Tinubu may be his greatest undoing if he tries to be reelected in 2027.

Gabam noted a number of the Tinubu administration's unpopular measures, including as the abrupt elimination of the gasoline subsidy, the unification of exchange rates, the increase in energy and telephone tariffs, and more.

"If Tinubu want to leave a legacy in two years, he must reconsider some of his policies and reorganize his cabinet. On the Sunday episode of Channels Television's sociopolitical show Inside Sources with Laolu Akande, Gabam stated, "And I don't see him surviving another election with the same kind of policies going on."

With less than two years in office, the SDP leader claimed that the protests against the Tinubu administration were similar to those against the former president Goodluck Jonathan's administration in 2012.

Two years into his presidency, protests against Jonathan began, and he was unable to withstand them. Furthermore, no president in Nigerian history has ever spent as much money to win reelection as President Jonathan. Therefore, people are misled if they believe that they will spend money. Only as long as you are well-liked will you rig," he remarked.

According to the SDP chair, the Tinubu administration should take action to change the constitution so that Nigeria is a one-party state, criticizing it for its "hostilities" with opposition views.

"No one can speak to a governor; he will mistreat you; he is an emperor; you dare not speak to him or give him advice," he declared. The current administration is no different.

SDP Not Bankrolled By APC — Chair

Additionally, Gabam refuted allegations that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) bribes political parties N50 million, arguing that doing so would undermine the opposition's monitoring function.

Last week, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar said that the APC government had bribed opposition groups with N50 million to undermine their leadership in preparation for the upcoming election. The accusation was made last week at a national conference on bolstering democracy by Atiku, the Peoples Democratic Party's (PDP) 2023 presidential contender.

"It's not true," the SDP chair responded. I am unable to speak for other political parties because I am an SDP member. SDP, the Federal Government, its agents, or its representatives do not engage in a single transaction with one another. Not at all. Never.

"We are attempting to create institutions, not undermine them. You will lose the right to speak as soon as you undermine an institution because you have compromised both that institution and your conscience.

"The government may as well change the constitution to establish a one-party system if it does not want opposition."
