The deaths of sixteen travelers along the Uromi/Obajana Expressway in Udune Efandion Community, Edo State, have been denounced by the Edo State Police Command.

On March 27, 2025, a party of travelers were attacked, lynched, and had their truck burned on fire by a bunch of irate mob members and vigilantes.

The victims were among 25 passengers in a truck registered KKF 225 XA that was transporting them from Elele, Rivers State, according to a statement issued by CSP Moses Joel Yamu, the Police Public Relations Officer.

At Uromi, vigilante members stopped the truck and discovered that some of the occupants were carrying dane guns that were built in the area.

As the situation worsened, the group was labeled suspected kidnappers, even though the vigilantes apparently detained some of the armed travelers.

This sparked a violent attack by locals and onlookers, which resulted to the destruction of the truck and the lynching of sixteen travelers.

According to the statement, "While this was going on, some vigilante members warned that they might be kidnappers, which prompted some community members and bystanders to attack and lynch sixteen (16) of the occupants, while the truck carrying them was also set on fire.

After learning about the occurrence, police officers from the Uromi Division quickly attacked the area and rescued ten (10) of the tourists. Two (2) of them were taken to a hospital where they are currently receiving favorable treatment after suffering various degrees of injury.

Fourteen (14) individuals have been taken into custody in relation to the crime over the course of the investigations, and an emergency meeting was called with community members and stakeholders to discuss the matter.

While the Commissioner of Police reiterates the need for peaceful coexistence among various groups and exhorts residents to maintain composure and cooperate with the police as investigations proceed, a unit of Police Mobile Force personnel along with other command tactical teams have been deployed to the area to prevent a breakdown of law and order.

"She also cautioned against any form of reprisal attacks or unlawful gatherings that may further escalate tensions," Yamu said.
