Wike's Bold Peace Proposal: Will Fubara Bite?

Wike gives conditions for peace with Fubara
Nyesom Wike, the Federal Capital Territory's minister, has outlined the terms for any sincere reconciliation with Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his erstwhile political ally.
Wike spoke about the ongoing tensions in Rivers State on Friday, April 25 at the Honourable Ken Chikere's platinum jubilee celebration in Port Harcourt. He underlined that although he is amenable to peace, it must be sincere and incorporate all significant political players, not just be a front.

“We are men of peace, not of trouble. But it must be peace with sincerity, not peace as a decoy. Members of the State Assembly, the National Assembly, and the two major political parties must be involved,” he said.
Wike accused the state's senior statesmen of culpability in the issue and questioned the concrete measures they had made to promote peace, criticizing their silence. Additionally, he denounced what he called media blackmail methods, emphasizing that they would not end the political unrest.
“No amount of embarrassment or blackmail can bring peace. What can bring peace is humility and a sincere commitment to the interests of the state,” he said.
The former governor of Rivers State also vehemently refuted reports that he had passed out and was transported overseas for medical attention. Wike stressed that his trip abroad was not for medical reasons, but rather to attend his son's graduation.
“I am here. I am healthy—very, very well,” he stated. “Someone started spreading that I had collapsed. I was never sick. And even if I were, am I not a human being? Those who wish others to fall will be the ones to fall. And when you fall, it will be final,” he added.
His remarks come after ongoing hostilities with Governor Fubara, whom he had backed in the 2023 gubernatorial race but has subsequently had a significant falling out with.
