African Union lifts sanctions on Gabon

The African Union (AU) announced on Wednesday that it had eased sanctions on Gabon.
Following a coup in August 2023, Central Africa was suspended from the organisation.
Brice Oligui Nguema, who led the coup, promised to return the oil-rich country to civilian governance after a two-year transition period, and was elected President earlier this month with more than 94% of the vote.
The AU's democratic Affairs, Peace, and Security Department announced on X that a meeting of the Peace and Security Council on Gabon's democratic transition examined the processes and deemed them to be generally effective.
