The problem started on Sunday night when Abdullahi Musa, a motorbike mechanic, was taken into custody for allegedly riding recklessly and dangerously, the Kano State Police Command said in a news statement on Monday. When he was arrested, it was thought that he was under the influence of drugs.

Musa was taken to Rano General Hospital after experiencing health issues while in custody, according to the police. "Unfortunately, while receiving treatment, he passed away on May 26, 2025, at approximately 6:00 am," stated SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the Kano Command's Police Public Relations Officer.

Following news of his death, a group of irate youngsters reportedly stormed the Rano Police Division, lighting parts of the station ablaze and wrecking several vehicles.

“The attackers looted and torched sections of the station, burnt two vehicles, destroyed ten others, and seriously injured the DPO,” Kiyawa added.

The DPO, whose name was not mentioned in the statement, was immediately transferred to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries later that day.

In the aftermath of the assault, authorities reported the arrest of 27 persons allegedly participating in the attack. The issue has now been brought under control, according to authorities.

Ibrahim Bakori, the Commissioner of Police, has directed that the event be investigated in a "comprehensive and transparent manner." Additionally, he visited His Highness Mohammed Isah Umar, the Emir of Rano, to offer condolences.

"We are dedicated to identifying the immediate and distant causes of this tragic series of events," said CP Bakori. "Justice will be served to those who are accountable, whether through direct action or incitement."

Residents were urged by the police to maintain composure and refrain from enforcing the law on their own. SP Kiyawa reiterated the Command's commitment to public safety and appealed, "Let us allow the investigation to run its full course."
