Federal government’s earlier comments on custodial centres
Recall that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu authorized the relocation of 29 correctional facilities throughout Nigeria last month.
Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the interior minister, emphasized the necessity of the project by pointing out that many of the current facilities, such as those in Suleja and Ikoyi, were constructed in the 19th century and were no longer functional.
During the launching of 39 new vehicles and five bulletproof guard booths for the Nigerian detention Service (NCoS) in Abuja, Tunji-Ojo said, "The president has graciously approved for us to start the process of relocating 29 correctional centers."

According to the information acquired, the relocation plan aimed to improve security, fix significant infrastructure inadequacies, and create an environment that would facilitate effective rehabilitation.
The action will guarantee updated correctional systems that assist both officers and prisoners, Tunji-Ojo emphasized.

Koton Karfe prison
The Koton Karfe Correctional Centre, which can house 160 prisoners, is situated in the historic town along the Kpareke-Adeghele route.
It took the place of the town's first prison, which had been built in the early 1900s and was situated a short distance from Ohimeghe Iguh's palace.

It was established in response to the outdated prison's deteriorating facilities and space limitations.
Koton Karfe jail is situated on the bank of the Niger River, approximately 1.5 kilometers from the palace of Ohimeghe Iguh or from the old prison heading toward the Kpareke-Adeghele route.
In recent years, it has documented jail break-ins and natural calamities that let prisoners escape.
Five prisoners who had previously escaped from the prison were apprehended last month, according to information obtained.
Many prisoners, including one Kabir Sokoto, a suspected Boko Haram kingpin, escaped during a breakout and explosion at the institution in 2012.
Although five of them were eventually apprehended, at least 13 prisoners—three of whom were convicted—broke their cells and fled through the fence on July 30, 2016.

Escape of inmates unfortunate – Kogi govt
The government of Kogi State called yesterday's episode "unfortunate" and promised the populace that it was taking strong action to stop it from happening again.
"The theory that the inmates escaped through the tower without causing any structural damage raises serious concerns," said Kingsley Femi Fanwo, Commissioner for Information and Communications, in a statement. To ascertain the precise circumstances of the escape, apprehend the escaping prisoners, and find potential systemic saboteurs, a comprehensive investigation is necessary.
In order to prevent future security breaches, Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo has instructed the State Security Adviser to work with the correctional facility and other security organizations.

“The state government has also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting federal security agencies through logistics and other necessary resources to enhance their operational effectiveness.”
While the government commended the swift response of security agencies in handling the situation, it urged residents to remain vigilant.
“We call on the public to report any suspicious individuals in their communities. Anyone found harbouring an escaped inmate will be held accountable,” the commissioner added. The Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) said it recaptured five of the 12 inmates who escaped from the Kogi custodial centre on Monday morning.
A statement issued by Abubakar Umar, the service’ Public Relations Officer (SPRO), Deputy Controller of Corrections, (DCC), on Monday in Abuja, said some of the Awaiting Trial Inmates (ATIs) in a section of the facility manipulated the padlocks, leading to the escape of 12 inmates.
Umar stated that upon receiving reports of the incident, the acting Controller-General of NCoS, Mr Sylvester Nwakuche, in collaboration with heads of sister security agencies immediately mobilised to the facility.
He said that personnel were also deployed to secure the facility, restore order and initiate a manhunt for the escapees.
“As of this moment, five of the fleeing inmates have been recaptured, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining inmates and bring them to justice.
“The NCoS acting controller-general has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“Additionally, a security audit is being conducted across all correctional facilities nationwide to prevent future occurrences.
“We urge members of the public to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by providing any useful information that may assist in the recapture of those still-at-large inmates.
“Citizens are also encouraged to report any suspicious activities to the nearest security agency,” he said.
FG orders probe
Meanwhile, the federal government earlier yesterday ordered probe into the jailbreak.
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, described the incident as unfortunate and vowed to ensure all fleeing inmates are captured leveraging the service’s robust biometrics and already deployed technology solutions.
A statement by Babatunde Alao, a media aide to the Minister of Interior, said Tunji-Ojo ordered the acting Comptroller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Sylvester Ndidi, to visit the facility in Kogi to evaluate the situation and commence a comprehensive audit to unravel the events that led to the incident.
“We are on top of the situation. Our men are on ground in Kogi, and I have ordered a comprehensive audit of the situation,” the minister said.
